Revolutionizing Equine Design: The IIEC Project

Mimark Mimarlık's Unique Approach to Equestrian Architecture

Combining a passion for architecture and equestrian sports, Mimark Mimarlık introduces the IIEC project, a unique equine design that prioritizes the health and behavior of horses and riders. This innovative design, which won the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2021, is a testament to the transformative power of architecture in enhancing lifestyle and sports.

Mimark Mimarlık, led by Kutsal Alkan, drew inspiration from firsthand experiences as a licensed rider and architect. The team's intimate understanding of horses' behavior and needs was the driving force behind the IIEC project. The design's uniqueness lies in its consideration of the horses' health and behavior, resulting in a compact, simple, and modern structure that harmonizes with nature.

The IIEC project stands out for its innovative use of materials and technology. The building features a steel structure with mechanical stone cladding, a wooden ceiling, and a metal roof. The design also incorporates sand and watering technology, a departure from standard architectural elements. To ensure natural ventilation and lighting, the design includes glass operable roofs.

Located in Beykoz, Istanbul, Turkey, the IIEC project spans a 30.00* sum area. It houses stables and indoor (35m*70m) and outdoor (50m*80m) arenas, all designed to meet international equestrian sports standards. Despite the project's challenges, including a limited area and a lower elevation than the stream, Mimark Mimarlık successfully completed the project between the end of 2019 and the start of 2020.

Research played a crucial role in the design process. Mimark Mimarlık drew insights from Prof. Dr. Ulrich Schnitzer's published works and e-books on creating a healthy environment for horses. The team also gained valuable knowledge from worldwide examples, fair visits, and the Equestrian Sports World Fair in Germany (2018-2020).

The IIEC project is more than just an equestrian facility. It includes an indoor/outdoor arena, a club house, a guest house, and a private housing unit. Although designed for private use, the facility meets the international FEI standards. The design's inspiration came from the farm's location near the forest, resulting in a modern, compact structure that prioritizes the health of horses. The layout and materiality of the design reflect the natural life and health of horses, demonstrating that architecture and nature can coexist harmoniously.

The IIEC project's Silver A' Design Award is a testament to Mimark Mimarlık's innovative approach to equine design. The award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that exhibit outstanding expertise and innovation. The IIEC project is a shining example of how architecture can enhance lifestyle and sports, making it a worthy recipient of this prestigious award.
